Day One - to Chicago: Jamie and I left my house at 7:00 in the morning on August 5th. My dad helped us shove the last of our bags in the car, warning us not to open either of the back passenger doors for fear we would be buried in our own belongings. We left New York via the George Washington Bridge and made our way onto I-80 West. This first day we were to travel 800 miles, approximately 13 hours.
Within the first hour we quickly made Jamie's 1998 Toyota, Corolla our home. CDs, water bottles, and food wrappers quickly accumulated in the front seat while we sang songs, consulted our maps, and listened to NPR. We came up with a driving schedule deciding that each of us would drive four hours at a time stopping only for gas and at the occasional rest area to stretch our legs. We made great time and soon we were zipping through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. Every time we logged another hundred miles we celebrated; upon entering each new state we cheered. (When you are in a car for 13 hours you find unique ways to amuse yourself.)
We finally made it into Illinois and after a quick detour in the south side of Chicago, along with a ride down Lake Shore Drive to see Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, we made our way to Rachel and Perry's house. They were waiting for us with dinner and a much-needed bed. It did not take us long to fall asleep that night.
